Lech Kaczynski, president of the Republic of Poland, Maria Kaczynska, the president’s wife, Ryszard Kaczorowski, former president in exile of the Republic of Poland, along with parliamentarians, senators, secretaries of state, priests, diplomats, the central bank governor, the Olympic committee president and chiefs of the army all died in a crash on April 10th 2010.
Dear Joanna, dear friends with Polish background,
Although we are all Canadians, many of us do have strong ties to the countries of our origins – so we in the Czechoslovak Society of Arts and Sciences know how you must be feeling these days. We express our deepest sympathies to you all in these hard times that the country of your origins is going through, multiplied by the cruel irony of the location of this tragedy. There are a few highly symbolic places in the histories of our countries – you have the Katyn, we Czechs have the Munich…. But, in a way Katyn is a symbol for all those who lived through the communist dictatorships and how it came about, so we feel you pain as much as if it were Czech or Slovak leaders who perished.
Please convey our condolences to all your colleagues, friends, members and non-members of your society alike.
With deep sympathies
